Democracy

Here is what wikipedia says on the meaning of the word Democracy:
The term originates from the Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía) "rule of the people", which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) "people" and κράτος (kratos) "power" or "rule"
In the current political conflict between branches of US government, what happened was that the will of people was not reflected in the decision making process, as the majority of them did not want a government shutdown. People certainly have different views on why this happened and whose fault it was but most of them did not want the government to get into this situation. For those who study different models of democracy, this can be an interesting point where a democratic system was unable to give the power to people and ignored people's demand. To me it was like an sluggish system that did not have enough agility  to materialize people's decision.
Democratic governments all over the world are realistic models that try to get close to an ideal case where people rule without any limitations but in practice this does not happen all the time.
These kind of situations should alert political scientists to search for better models and make suggestions to improve the system. This hyper-connected world that we live in now, despite some drawbacks, brings along great opportunities for more direct role for people in political decision making.
